Floating along

So it looks like the spots in my vision are annoying but not threatening my vision.  The eye doctor says that they are floaters.  I did find one doctor on the web who offers treatment via lasers, but if they do just naturally go away it isn't worth it. My doctor suggested that LASIK might help in that it would make me less nearsighted and so less bugged by the effect.

From WebMD:

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions About Eye Problems, with Bill Lloyd, MD What's a Floater in the Eye?

Learn about the free-floating chunks of gel in your eye.

Why am I seeing funny shapes and spots?

Answer:

VITREOUS is the name of the clear material that fills the eyeball. About 80% of the eye's volume is vitreous, just like a small spherical fish tank! You may recognize the Latin word "vitreous" as molten glass. Human vitreous has a similar appearance and physical properties.

The vitreous in children is very firm and gelatinous. In older folks the vitreous turns to water. That means there's a transition period during which the gel "melts." The medical term for this process is SYNERESIS (SIN-ERR-REE-SISS). (Hey, you knew we had a term for this!)

During syneresis some of the gel is still partially formed in chunks. These free-floating chunks represent your floaters. Although they are clear, these chunks cast an optical shadow on the retina, giving them a dark appearance.

Floaters typically don't appear in colors, but floaters can appear singly or in multiples. They appear in various shapes and sizes. I once had a patient who SWORE her biggest floater looked like President Abe Lincoln.

The vast majority of folks with floaters do not develop retinal detachment. When the vitreous separates from the retina along the wall of our "fish tank," it can stimulate light flashes in the retina. These can be plain or colorful. Persistent or progressive flashes should alert you to get a comprehensive eye exam.

Whether you see clusters, specks, black dots, or Presidents, most floaters go away over time. Either the gel completely dissolves, or the chunks settle down to the bottom of the eye, or (most likely) your brain learns to simply ignore them. There is no medical therapy available to eliminate floaters.

Rhianna's 6 month checkup

Rhianna is a happy, cuddly little baby.  16.5 lbs, 25.5 inches, 75 percentile for both.  She's beginning to crawl with her tummy off the ground. And she gurgles with laughter a lot.  She really likes to be put in the swing.

I'm going to try using journal prompts from Diarist.net
"If you could get an honest answer to just one question from everyone you ever met, what would it be?"

Haven't a clue.  There are so many truths that we choose not to know or that would be impossible to know in advance. Even the most honest people color the truths they tell through their perceptions. Which is why you'll get numerous eyewitness reports of a crime that just don't match up.  I'd rather have the ability to understand the context of the answers given.

Curses! Foiled again!
Urrgh, this time it's John's car that doesn't work properly, won't start.  Thanks be for John's parents' seeming limitless supply of cars and their extended vacation or we'd be screwed.  But no park today, since John had to swipe my borrowed car until he gets home from work this evening.

Rhianna has started turning and reaching for people. Well, me anyway.

Grumpy old troll

My string of ill luck continues.  I went to borrow the in law's SUV while my car gets repaired and there was a huge puddle of water on the driver's seat floor.  Well I guess it was lucky for them, by the time they saw it, there probably would have been lots of mold, now I can clean it up.  And their brakes are squeaking, they will not be happy when I tell them.

We went to the park again today.  Natalie really loves to run around on the slides and swings.  Rhianna has a good time on the baby swing.  I played grumpy old troll under the bridge for all the little giggling girls.  They have a good time being horrified. Eeek! Eeek! But most of all Natalie loves to hang out with her buddy Tommy from across the street.

Must write in blog

Must write in blog. Must write in blog.
Rhianna rolls over like a champion now. And she's found her feet so she's doing that cute thing with grabbing them.  Gurgles with laughter at stupid stuff her mommy and sister do.
Natalie loves the park, wants to go to school (that'll last long) and has decided her new best friend is Tommy the little boy across the street.
Natalie and I were looking at a photo of John and his brother from a couple of years ago.  John has lost 30 lbs since then and it really shows in his face.  But don't mention it to him, it makes him worry that he's going to die of some unknown disease, since he wasn't technically dieting. (Stopped drinking scads of soda and juice and cut down on the sweets)
And me, I'm having an unlucky week.  Car has a coolant leak, and I need to take it in, which means I need to find the paperwork on the extended warranty, haven't seen that since we bought the car.  Garage door opener stopped working Sunday night, with my car inside.  Didn't realize until Tuesday afternoon when I was absolutely out of milk, that I couldn't get the door to stay open while I backed out the car without help. Both girls have the sniffles and I'm hoping it doesn't get worse, ie have to give Natalie the breathing treatments.
I need to actually file my taxes but given the way this week seems to be cursed, I'm sure we would be audited if I did it today.

Seuss-ebration

We're going to a Dr. Seuss celebration tomorrow-day at the library. Natalie really enjoyed how the grinch stole christmas, so I'm looking forward to seeing how much she likes the other books. I've got to create a whole little task list of the errands I need to run, including getting some more engine coolant for my car because it is apparently very low and bleeping at me.
