Jen relative lastatempa kontribuo al la ĝenro de “instruaj romanetoj” en Esperanto, laŭ la tradicio de La Verda Koro, Karlo kaj Gerda Malaperis.

Katrina (kiu unue aperis antaŭ unu-du jaroj en La krimo de Katrina) nun fariĝis instruistino en Gotenburgo, havenurbo ĉe la okcidenta marbordo de Svedio. Ŝia klaso estas tre kosmopolita, kun multaj geknaboj el multaj landoj kaj lingvoj. Aparte amikaj estas Gloria, filino de gambia patro kaj sveda patrino, kaj Halina, kiu enmigris de Belorusio kun sia patrino post kiam ŝia juda patro, ĵurnalisto, “malaperis” en la belorusan karceraron. Sed nun la sveda registaro rifuzas peton de Halina kaj la patrino por konstante loĝi en Svedio, kaj ili devas reiri, se ne al Belorusio, almenaŭ al Pollando. Venas la somera ferio, kaj Katrina konsentas vojaĝi kun Gloria al Pollando por serĉi la perditan amikinon …

La libro estas en relative facila Esperanto — fakte, ĝi enhavas nur 8 373 vortojn kaj nur 493 morfemojn; la lastaj estas pliparte el listoj de plej ofte uzataj morfemoj. Kunmetitaj formoj estas maloftaj; mi kaprice elektis la unuan, kvarlinian, alineon de ĉapitro 17 kaj trovis nur kvar (patrino, eklaboris, lernejo, amikinon). Oni laŭgrade prezentas la gramatikajn formojn, ĉapitron post ĉapitro (sed Johansson faras ĉi tie unu eraron; laŭ li, “en ĉapitroj 1-2 aperas nur as-formoj de la verboj…” sed fakte aperas ankaŭ i-formoj).

Unu el la allogaj ecoj de la romaneto estas la humuremo de Johansson pri homaj antaŭjuĝoj. Ekzemple: “La patro de Gloria venis el la afrika lando Gambio antaŭ dek kvin jaroj. Li estas juristo, sed en Svedio li ne trovis juran laboron. Do li komencis instrui afrikan dancon. Antaŭe li neniam dancis, sed tio ne gravis. En vendejo li trovis tamburon, kaj baldaŭ li ekinstruis dancadon. Ĉiuj svedoj pensis, ke afrikano kompreneble scias tamburi kaj danci. Neniu pensis, ke li estas senlabora juristo.” (paĝoj 37-38) (Mi fakte vidis similan fenomenon en Usono.)

Johansson, Sten: A Journey with Katrina. Skövde (Sweden): Al-fab-et-o, 2002. 60 p. Paperback.

This is a relatively recent contribution to the genre of “didactic novellas” in Esperanto, in the tradition of The Green Heart, Karlo and Gerda Has Disappeared.

Katrina (who first appear one or two years ago in Katrina’s Crime) has now become a teacher in Gothenburg, a port city on the west coast of Sweden. Her class is very cosmopolitan, with many children of many countries and languages. Gloria, daughter of a Gambian father and a Swedish mother, and Halina, who immigrated from Belarus with her mother when her Jewish father, a journalist, “disappeared” into the Belarussian gulag, are special friends. But now the Swedish government has refused Halina’s and her mother’s request for permanent residence in Sweden, and they are forced to return, if not to Belarus, at least to Poland. Summer vacation arrives, and Katrina agrees to travel with Gloria to Poland to look for her lost friend …

The book is in relatively easy Esperanto — in fact, it contains just 8,373 words and just 493 morphemes; the latter are, for the most part, from lists of the most commonly used morphemes. Combined forms are rare; I chose by chance the first, four-line, paragraph from chapter 17 and found only four (patrino = mother, eklaboris = started work, lernejo = school, amikinon = friend of the female persuasion). The grammatical forms are introduced by degrees, chapter by chapter (but Johansson makes one error her; he states that “in chapter 1-2 only present tense forms of the verb appear…” but in fact the infinitive form appears as well).

One of the novella’s attractive features is Johansson’s sense of humor about human prejudices. For example: “Gloria’s father came from the African country of Gambia fifteen years earlier. He was a lawyer, but in Sweden he did not find legal work. So he began to teach African dance. He had never danced before, but that wasn’t important. In a shop he found a drum, and soon he started teaching dancing. All Swedes believed that an African must naturally know how to drum and dance. Nobody thought that he was an unemployed lawyer.” (pp. 37-38) (I’ve seen a similar phenomenon in the United States.)

An interesting, easy-to-read novella.
