Amusing but very, very minor.

For Notting Hill, one can forgive Hugh Grant much. For Practical Magic, one can forgive Sandra Bullock much. Here’s a film that allows us to forgive them both simultaneously.

George Wade (Grant) is a clueless womanizer who happens to run a multinational megacorp for his brother; why this should be so, I can’t figure out, since the brother’s IQ seems to run higher than the double digits of Grant’s character. Lucy Kelson (Bullock) is a Harvard-educated lawyer who is heavily into lying-down-in-front-of-a-wrecking-ball save-the-whales causes. Naturally, their paths cross, and naturally Wade hires Kelson to be his company’s chief attorney, and naturally she accepts the deal. After some months of running together in the fast lane, Wade finds that he can’t tie his shoes without advice from Kelson, and Kelson finds that she would rather do something other with her life than advise Wade on tying his shoes, so she gives notice (the title of the film). The rest of the film has to do with them finding out that they can’t live without each other, poor things.

Amusing but very, very minor.

Don Harlow bio info. Born longer ago than he cares to admit, Don Harlow has worked as a military weather forecaster, neophyte astronomer, computer programmer and office manager. His primary avocations are reading science-fiction and fantasy and promoting the international language Esperanto. He has successfully raised three daughters and a son, the oldest of whom (Gwen) is responsible for designing this site and giving it to him as a Christmas present. Movies are, for him, a pleasant way of passing an afternoon or evening; his only connection with the movie industry consists in a long-ago four week period during which he worked as an usher at the Lake Theater in Oswego, Oregon.
