Interesa historia (sed eble tute fikcia) rakonto. English version follows. LAGERKVIST Pär: Mariamne. Elsvedigis Bertil Nilsson. Translated by Bertil Nilsson. Skövde: Al-fab-et-o, 1995. 56 p. Paper. This is a novella about that Herod who ordered the massacre of the children in order to get rid of the Messiah. The author, a Nobel Laureate, describes him as genuinely paranoid. And this paranoid ruler of Judea falls in love with a good-hearted young Jewish woman, Mariamne, daughter of the opposition family the Maccabees, who agrees to become his wife in the hope, like that of many other wives, of changing her husband. The result is, of course, tragic. An interesting historical (but perhaps completely fictional) tale. Don Harlow, March 20, 2007 08:58 PMFeedback
