Gates, Ronald Cecil: The Seven-Day Murder Riddle. Antwerpen: Flandra Esperanto-Ligo, 1991. 75 p. ISBN90-71205-40-1. This is the first of (until now) four murder mysteries, of which the fourth (Fatal Excursion) has just appeared. In an Australian university town the body of a young woman is found in a eucalyptus grove. To solve the mystery, police commissar Roberto Elis of the city police and Petro Tomson of the university security group are called on. After a week of investigation, they finally find the culprit. This first work is not, in my opinion, the best murder mystery ever written. The author has to hide several important matters from the reader, to ensure that he will not precede the policemen in solving the case; despite this, I myself guessed the identity of the criminal 10-15 pages before the end of the book. As often happens, the language of the book is relatively simple, and you can read it with pleasure at one sitting if you don’t expect too much from the plot. | Don Harlow bio info. Born longer ago than he cares to admit, Don Harlow has worked as a military weather forecaster, neophyte astronomer, computer programmer and office manager. His primary avocations are reading science-fiction and fantasy and promoting the international language Esperanto. He has successfully raised three daughters and a son, the oldest of whom (Gwen) is responsible for designing this site and giving it to him as a Christmas present. Movies are, for him, a pleasant way of passing an afternoon or evening; his only connection with the movie industry consists in a long-ago four week period during which he worked as an usher at the Lake Theater in Oswego, Oregon.
