Mi unue renkontis ne la verkiston sed la tradukiston Stellan Engholm tre frue en mia esperantisteco, kiam mi aĉetis, legis, kaj raviĝis de lia traduko de Gösta Berling de Nobelpremiito Selma Lagerlöf. Jarojn poste oni informis min, ke li ankaŭ tradukis, en la daŭro de nur 20 tagoj, la tutan manuskripton de Per balono al la poluso pri la Andrée-ekspedicio tial, ke ĝi povu aperi en Esperanto ĉe la eldonisto samtempe kun versioj en ok aliaj lingvoj. Sed inter esperantistoj li estas pli bone memorata unue pro siaj originalaj romanetoj pri la vilaĝo Torento (Al Torento, Infanoj en Torento, Junuloj en Torento, Vivo vokas) kaj pro la plenvalora romano Homoj sur tero. Ĉi tiu libro prezentas al ni naŭ liajn originalajn novelojn, verkitajn en bonegstila kaj relative facile legebla Esperanto inter la jaroj 1932 kaj 1958, kiam aperis lia fina verkaĵo antaŭ lia morto (la titola noveleto).

“La lupo sur Kapitolo”, dupaĝa, priskribas enkaĝigitan lupon en la koro de urbo, kiun fondis knabo kies patrino mem estis lupo (Romulus). “La fajrofesto” traktas la komencon de la printempo en Svedio kaj rivalecon inter du grupoj de gejunuloj. En “Silenta Fredriko” sveda taglaboristo provas liberigi sin de la ĉiutagaj rutinaĵoj kaj tuj ekkomprenas, ke li ne scias, kio estas vera libereco. “Stult-kuraĝa” levas la demandon: kia estas la postmorta ĉielo, kiel atingi ĝ^in, kion oni trovos tie. En “Knabo kaj birdo” juna knabo sagpafas birdon kaj tiam provas reflegi ĝin al bona sano. “La branĉetoj”, kiu tekstas kiel pastiĉo de Hans Christian Andersen, rakontas la vivon kaj morton de kelkaj branĉetoj detonditaj de siaj plantaĵoj por “utili”, t.e. servi kiel neĝobalailo. En “Festo”, kiu reportas nin al la amata de Engholm vilaĝo Torento, maljuna viro ne tute komforte bonvenigas al sia hejmo la gefilojn, bogefilojn kaj genepojn por la kristnaska sezono. En “Maljunulo migras”, alia maljuna viro, mistraktite de la edzino kaj bofratino, decidas eskapi de sia hejmo kaj promeni 240 kilometrojn al Stokholmo por serĉi helpon ĉe sia filo; tro baldaŭ li eltrovas, ke 76-jarulo ne estas tiel elasta kiel 26-jarulo iam estis. “Venĝo” revenigas sukcesa domkonstruisto al sia hejma distrikto por viziti sian patrinon — kaj por renkonti bienan administranton kiu malbone traktis lin dum lia junaĝo, kaj lerni, ke venĝo ne ĉiam estas bongusta.

La libron finas tri artikoloj pri Engholm. El Literatura Mondo en la jaro 1932 Jean Forge priskribas viziton al la hejmo de la verkisto Engholm kaj lia edzino. Kaj el la paĝoj de La Espero de la jaro 1960 Ernfrid Malmgren kaj Ferenc Szilagyi proponas eŭlogiojn pri la ĵus forpasinta verkisto.

I first met not the author but the translator Stellan Engholm very early in my Esperanto-speaking career, when I bought, read and was enchanted by his translation of Nobel Laureate Selma Lagerlöf’s Gösta Berlings Saga. Years later I was told that he was also the translator, in only 20 days, of the entire manuscript of By Balloon to the Pole, about the Andrée Expedition, so that it could appear in Esperanto from the publisher simultaneously with versions in eight other languages. But among Esperanto speakers he is better remembered primarily for his original novellas about the village of Torento (Al Torento, Infanoj en Torento, Junuloj en Torento, Vivo vokas) and for his complete novel Homoj sur tero. This book gives us nine of his original short stories, written in Esperanto that is of excellent style and relatively easily readable. Stories date from the years between 1932 and 1958, when his last work before his death appeared (the title vignette).

“La lupo sur Kapitolo” (The Wolf on the Capitoline), two pages long, describes a caged wolf in the heart of a city that was founded by a boy whose mother was herself a wolf (Romulus). “La fajrofesto” (The Fire Celebration) treats of the beginning of spring in Sweden and a rivalry between two groups of young people. in “Silenta Fredriko” (Silent Frederick) a Swedish day-worker tries to liberate himself from the daily routines and immediately learns that he does not know what real freedom is. “Stult-kuraĝa” (Stupid-Brave) raises the question: what is Heaven like, how can you get there, what will you find there. in “Knabo kaj birdo” (A Boy and a Bird) a young boy shoots a bird with an arrow and then tries to nurse it back to health. “La branĉetoj” (The Branches), which reads like a Hans Christian Andersen pastiche, tells of the life and death of a few branches cut off of their plants to “be useful”, i.e. serve as a snow broom. In “Festo” (Festival), which carries us back to Engholm’s beloved village of Torento, an old man with some discomfort welcomes his children, their spouses and their children to his home for the Christmas season. In “Maljunulo migras” (An Old Man Travels), another old man, mistreated by his wife and sister-in-law, decides to escape from his home and walk 240 kilometers to Stockholm to seek help from his son; too soon he discovers that a 76-year-old is not as elastic as a 26-year-old once was. “Veng^o” (Vengeance) brings back a successful home-builder to his home district to visit his mother — and to meet an estate administrator who treated him badly in his youth, and to learn that vengeance doesn’t always have a good taste.

The book finishes with three articles about Engholm. From Literatura Mondo in the year 1932 Jean Forge describes a visit to the home of author Engholm and his wife. And from the pages of La Espero of the year 1960 Ernfrid Malmgren and Ferenc Szilagyi offer eulogies about the author who has just passed away.

A book that can be read with pleasure.
