Kuniberto Lempel, de la germana vilaĝo Grenhejmo, posedas butikon de paperaĵoj, kaj lin minacas nenio pli danĝera ol foja papervundeto. Unu tagon, sur benko en la parko, li renkontas junan nigran virinon — strangaĵon en eta Grenhejmo. Ŝi estas Kilevamba Lababa, filino de prezidento de iu afrika lando, kiu studas fariĝi flegistino kaj ambicias fariĝi homhelpantino. Enamiĝinte, Kuniberto proponas al Ŝi geedziĝon, vendas sian paperaĵbutikon, aĉetas helikopteron, kaj ili du fariĝas kunaj homhelpantoj, kies unua tasko estas savi la homojn de la insulo Sisimanio en la Manabia Oceano de malsatmorto pro lastatempa naftoŜipa katastrofo apud tiu insulo. Tion ili faras per multe da bonvolo, multe da muskolstreĉa laboro, kaj multe da helpo de kelkaj bonvolaj apudaj landoj.

Se mi devus kritiki ĉi tiun libron, mi mencius ĉefe la senhezitan helpemon de kelkaj naciaj gravuloj (tion oni malofte vidas en la reala mondo) kaj la fantazian geografion de la mondparto sude de Turkio. La lingvaĵo estas rapide kaj facile legebla. La ilustraĵoj, eble pli ol la rakonto mem, estas taŭgaj por infana libro.

Gudrun Pausewang estas konata germana verkisto de infanrakontoj, kiuj, laŭ mia usona gusto, iom pli taŭgas por plenkreskuloj ol por infanoj. Elinter Ŝiaj libroj jam aperis en Esperanto ankaŭ La lastaj infanoj de Oldrovalo, La avo en la ĉareto kaj La infanoj en la arboj.

Kunibert Lempel, of the German village of Grenheim, owns a paper-products show, where he is threatened by nothing more dangerous than an occasional paper cut. One day, on a bench in the park, he meets a young black woman — something very unusual in little Grenheim. She is Killewamba Lababa, daughter of the president of an African country, who is studying to become a nurse and has ambitions of becoming a “homhelpanto” (person who goes around helping other people). Kunibert, after falling in love with her, proposes marriage, sells his paper shop, buys a helicopter, and the two of them become “homhelpantoj” together; their first job is to save the people of the island of Sisimania in the Manabic Ocean from starvation caused by a recent tanker catastrophe off the island. They do so with much good will, much hard work and much help from several kind neighbor countries.

If I had to criticize this book, I would mention mainly the unhesitating willingness to help of several important persons of neighboring nations (this is rarely seen in the real world) and the fantastic geography of the part of the world south of Turkey. The language is quickly and easily readable. The illustrations, perhaps more than the story itself, are suitable for a children’s book.

Gudrun Pausewang is a well known German author of children’s stories, which, to my American taste, are perhaps a bit more suitable for grown-ups than for children. Among her books, in addition to this one The Last Children in Oldroval, The Grandfather in the Cart and The Children in the Trees have already appeared in Esperanto.
