Zaft, Sylvan: Esperanto: A Language for the Global Village. Calgary: Esperanto Antauen Publishing, 2002. 157+ii p. Paper.

This introduction to Esperanto, which originally appeared on the internet in 1996 (and can still be accessed there), is an attempt to give English readers something like Claude Piron’s famous French-language work Le défi des langues: du gâchis au bon sens. Zaft wrote his own book because, as he says, “… the linguistic examples are, of course, aimed at native speakers of French. Most of them would be only confusing to English readers who have not learned a great deal of French.” (p. i)

In 25 chapters Zaft discusses the structure of Esperanto — a common thread throughout the book. Esperanto’s system of word-formation gets particular attention. Among other things, he discusses some of the more often criticized aspects of the language, approaching them from the viewpoint of costs vs. benefits, and invariably concludes that in each case the benefits strongly outweigh the costs; see chapters 15, 16 and 18. Auxlang readers may find his points in chapter 20 at least worthy of consideration.

Zaft also talks at length about his own experiences with the language, particularly comparing it with French, which he has studied for many years, though less fruitfully. And he doesn’t hesitate to include anecdotes about the experiences of others (including Piron) with Esperanto.

A good introduction to a knowledge about the language; but not a textbook, by any stretch of the imagination.

Ĉi tiu prezento de Esperanto, originale aperinta ĉe la reto en 1996 (ankoraŭ trovebla tie), estas provo doni al anglalingvaj legantoj ion similan al la konata franca verkaĵo de Claude Piron Le défi des langues: du gâchis au bon sens. Zaft verkis sian libron pro tio, ke “… la lingvaj ekzemploj kompreneble celas denaskajn parolantojn de la franca. La plimulto simple konfuzus anglalingvajn legantojn kiuj ne multe lernis la francan.” (p. i)

En la daŭro de 25 ĉapitroj Zaft diskutas la strukturon de Esperanto — ofta fadeno en la libro. Apartan atenton ricevas la Esperanta sistemo de vorfarado. Inter aliaj, li diskutas kelkajn ofte kritikatajn flankojn de la lingvo, alirante ilin laŭ la vidpunkto de kostoj kaj avantaĝoj, kaj ĉiam konkludas, ke en ĉiu kazo la avantaĝoj forte superas la kostojn; vidu ĉapitrojn 15, 16 kaj 18. Legantoj ĉe Auxlang eble trovos liajn punktojn en ĉapitro 20 almenaŭ meritas konsideron.

Zaft ankaŭ multe diskutas siajn spertojn rilate la lingvon, aparte kompare kun la franca, kiun li studadis dum multaj jaroj, tamen malpli fruktodone. Kaj li ne hezitas enmeti anekdotojn pri la spertoj de aliaj (ankaŭ Piron) pri Esperanto.
